Big Changes Are Coming in 2025 — Here's What You Need to Know

If you're a homeowner with an air conditioner, there's an important change on the horizon: R-454B, a new type of refrigerant, will be used in most new systems starting in 2025. This change affects how future systems are made, what kind of refrigerant is used, and what you can do if your current system breaks down.

Why Are Refrigerants Changing?

Refrigerants are the substances your air conditioner uses to cool your home. Older systems use R-22, and most newer systems use R-410A.

But both are being phased out due to their environmental impact. The EPA and other agencies are requiring manufacturers to switch to low-impact refrigerants — and R-454B is leading the charge.

What’s Different About R-454B?

R-454B is:

• More environmentally friendly
• Mildly flammable, which means new safety standards apply
• Not compatible with older R-22 or R-410A systems

Because of these differences, only systems specifically designed for R-454B can use it. That means you can’t just pour it into your existing unit.

What If You Have an R-22 System?

If your system is older and still uses R-22, here’s the deal:

• R-22 has already been phased out
• Repairs are expensive and refrigerant is hard to find
• If your system fails, you’ll likely need a full replacement
• You cannot switch to R-454B in that same unit

What If You Have an R-410A System?

Most homes built or updated in the last 10–15 years have systems that use R-410A.

Good news: you can still use and maintain them. But here's what to know:

• R-410A is being phased out starting in 2025
• Parts and refrigerant may become more expensive over time
• You cannot mix R-410A and R-454B — they are completely different
• If one unit fails, it may require replacing all connected units to ensure compatibility

You Can’t Mix and Match Units

This is really important: you cannot run a mix of R-410A and R-454B systems together. If one system in your home breaks down and the new replacement uses R-454B, it can’t be connected to older systems using R-410A or R-22.

Mixing refrigerants or connecting mismatched units is unsafe, will void warranties, and can damage your equipment.

2. Plan ahead if your system is more than 10 years old
